Frequently Asked Questions: A Veteran's Spouse requests a copy of the Veteran's DD Form 214. Can you give it to them?

Question

A Veteran's Spouse requests a copy of the Veteran's DD Form 214.  Can you give it to them?

Answer

The Department recommends not getting in the practice of doing this.  Should you wish to provide them a copy you may do so, but the Department recommends getting permission from the Veteran themselves.  Calling them on the phone, verifying the last 4 digits of their social security, to obtain verbal permission OR some sort of written request to release the DD Form 214.

Ultimately it's the County's decision but the Department does not recommend providing copies that can be obtained somewhere else.
