Frequently Asked Questions: Would married veterans, who qualify, each be eligible for the Veterans Exemption?

Question

Would married veterans, who qualify, each be eligible for the Veterans Exemption?

Answer

On occassion, you may encounter a situation where both people in a marriage are veterans and qualify for the exception.  Wyoming Statute does not limit the dollar amount to a "household", so special consideration must be taken in creating the veteran's records in VED.

Each veteran will need to have a Veteran Account created in VED.  In turn, each veteran will claim their spouse as well. For example:

Veteran Account #1:
            Veteran:    Joe Smith
            Spouse:     Betty Smith

Veteran Account #2:
            Veteran:    Betty Smith
            Spouse:     Joe Smith

If either veteran becomes deceased, the surving spouse would still receive both exemptions, one as a veteran and one as a widow(er).  In this particular circumstance, this household receives twice the benefit and should continue to do so until both veterans are deceased.
