Frequently Asked Questions: The Veteran in question is not married, but passes away after the January 1st Assessment Date. Are they still eligible for the exemption?

Question

The Veteran in question is not married, but passes away after the January 1st Assessment Date.  Are they still eligible for the exemption?

Answer

The owner of record, as of January 1st, is responsible for the taxes on the property.  If the Veteran has applied for the property tax exemption for that calendar year between January 1st and the fourth Monday in May, they are eligible for the exemption.  In this scenario, the benefit extends past the death of the Veteran only for the year in question and is included, with any remaining tax liability, to the estate.
